Step into a spine-tingling union of culture and nature when you join a Footprints Waipoua tour to connect with the oldest and largest kauri trees in the world.
Footprints Waipoua has been operating day and night tours of the Waipoua forest with local Maori guides since 2004. The signature 4-hour night tour is 1 of 2 New Zealand and 82 Global Lonely Planet Code Green ‘Experiences of a Lifetime. The night provides a natural stage for an unforgettable spiritual encounter with trees that have stood long before the birth of Jesus Christ and the arrival of Kupe, New Zealand’s first discoverer.
Why at night? Well, imagine that the moon is a giant candle in the heavens, the sky a blanket of shimmering stars, the crowds of people have dispersed, the silence is deafening and before you stands the silhouette of a giant. Meet Te Matua Ngahere (The Father of the Forest) and the oldest kauri in the world at 3,000 years old; the Four Sisters are a graceful collection of mature kauri trees that have performed the impossible and grown close together in sibling harmony and finally, Tane Mahuta (The Lord of the Forest) who stands an impressive 51 metres (150ft) tall and is the largest kauri tree in the world.
For an experience of a lifetime you can enquire at reception for a private or general Footprints Waipoua tour.
